i have just purchased a new house and the surveyors have told me to have builders check the facing brick footings on the extension and get a cost for repair, what is this and could it be serious/expensive

Perhaps they mean there is frost damage? Where the bricks have absorbed water which has later frozen and made the surface flake off?

Replacing them is a fiddly job for a bricklayer. It might be possible to render over them if the damage is slight, but we don't have frost down here  so I don't know.
