I have noticed that your responses on this forum and the other one can be quite cutting and in some circumstances very unfair. In particular that poor kid on the other forum who was simply looking for a little work and you felt the need to initially cut him to pieces. Obviously your conscience got the better of you and you then made it right.

I work as a solicitor and was formerly a practising barrister, consequently one could suggest that you and I are both very knowledgeable about what we do for a living. This does not give us the right to treat people any less respectfully.

Remember, you may need my services one-day and I am entirely sure that you will want an understanding advocate who has a sense of empathy for your problem but more importantly treats you as a fellow human being!

Be nice, just answering the queries does not give you the right to behave in any other manner.

Hey, Fin. How much do you charge per hour?

Tony gives endless good free plumbing advice in this forum.

When was the last time you gave out free legal advice?

He won't answer my questions - he'll just disappear.

Go on Supersparky tell me your tales of woe but do not forget that generalisations are unhelpful. I am sure that many people would decry electricians but as rational thinking human beings, we can safely say that that is not the case. Similarly with lawyers, the vast majority work for very little reward and received more than their fair share of bad press.

Anyway this thread is not about the vagaries of what people do for a living or indeed the characteristics that people attributed to various employments. This thread is simply about treating other people kindly!

legal aid hourly rate = £28.50

annual salary = £30,000 (criminal defence)

free legal advice = daily

I'm amazed.

Forgive me Finn but where does the £180 per hour my local solicitor charges come into it then?

I know, so am I and that is whyI constantly questioned why I continue doing this work. You can leave your work behind at the end of the day but mine continues through the night waiting for the police station to call or indeed wondering if I could have done a better job and prevented an innocent man going to prison.

There is no glamour, no secrecy and no mystery about what I do for a living. Some lawyers earn millions and they are the ones that the newspapers focus on, 90 percent of my colleagues earn very little for long hours but there is some measure of satisfaction when an innocent client genuinely thanks you for your hard work.

A couple of years ago the popular newspapers were reporting the plumbers were earning £100,000 per annum, I know that very few plumbers were earning this but the same misnomer has been said against lawyers also.

Question everything!

your local civil lawyer charges you £180 per hour. Most of this money is swallowed up by the partners in the practice and your average civil lawyer earns about £40,000 per annum. Just as you have to spend money purchasing tools and specialist equipment, so too in duly the practices.

Practising certificate for a Solicitor = £1000 per annum
one average legal book = about £400
secretaries, keeping files for 12 years, paper, machinery, offices etc etc it all costs a fortune.

Do not get me wrong, I am not trying to justify the £180, clearly the partners are making a very good living but is not that the way it always was.
