when replacing a F & E cistern (i want a new clean one with a proper lid)!! do they come in standard sizes as cold water tanks do? Or is there a way to work out roughly what size is required by calculating the water volume in your heating pipes/boiler/circuit? I know my feed cistern is pretty small, a lot smaller than my cold water tank but not sure of the size in litres/gallons...

There is a standard size which is adequate for all normal domestic installations.

The only thing to ensure is you set the float valve to close off the feed when there is only about 100 mm cold in the tank to allow space for the expansion which is about 80-100 mm typically.
