Filament bulbs to be banned - EEC initiative

OK ,,,, please remove the offending letters GLS from my OP. I meant the ban would apply to filament lamps. Put your handbags away.

Can we get back on topic

So, what do we do with all those dimmers? I can see lots of work on the forum while DIYers start plugging in low-energy lamps to light circuits that are fitted with dimmers. Anyone got a smart solution yet?

Can see how its going to work. I have a bathroom light that has G9 lamps in it. Are they gonna make low energy versions of all of these too?

Loads of dimmed G9 uplighters around - I have them in my lounge for "home cinema" mode. D*****d if I'm going to change all the fittings and lose the dimming facility.

So - off to buy 100x60W G9's, I guess.

No prob dimming 24ov G9s anyways but what will they replace them with (and many more specialist lamps too) to meet the low energy legislation that will come.

Its gonna be fun. Bet you'll still be able to buy standard filament lamps from Estonia & Poland for many years. Bet the French and Eyeties dont fall into line either....

Domestic lighting design = buy loads of downlighters, slap them in the ceiling, install a dimmer, job done.

There are loads of other options that don't require dimmers but I'm sure the same guys who gave us sky boxes that can be set via a mobile phone will also give us dimmable CF lamps before any ban is implemented.

PS...the article stated

The measures could include a ban on filament light bulbs by 2010, forcing people to switch to fluorescent bulbs.

Then lets make sure the non technical people who will make the decision are better informed about the problems that will be there if they do not get it right. And make sure they are going to consider that essential exemptions must be written into the policy.
