Hi all,

I've had a good trawl of the forum but cannot see any specific advice on this. I'm in the process of picking bits for my new kitchen and would like a ceramic undermount sink. Problem is, I'll be fitting it myself and I'm not sure how it's done. The company installing the worktops will only do it if they supply the sink, but the sinks they supply are too expensive for me. I'm thinking of something like this:

http://www.kitchen-appliances-direct.co.uk/default.aspx?view=item&itemid=7948

How are these secured to the worktop? I'd like to have some idea before ordering, so I know whether it's beyond my skill level before I start. I've seen other people talk of using silicone to do fix them to granite worktops - surely this isn't strong enough?! Or can it be secured with screws/clips? I've seen the Franke G-clips - can these be used to secure sinks to wooden worktops? Do I need a supporting shelf in any case?

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks

Nick

I have the same situation at the moment.

I have a wooden worktop and an undermount sink by Franke - http://www.frankeonline.co.uk/kubus-kbg-110-50-303-p.asp

Franke supply the G-clips for free which is good, but they won't comment as to if they will work with wood or not!! All of Franke's literature/videos shows only granite worktops being used with G-clips.

My carpenter has advised not to use the g-clips in case it doesn't hold.

Alternatives to these G-clips are very hard to find online. I have seen these, but only in the US. http://www.mrstone.com/accessories/cc732g-metal-sink-clip

Anyone used g-clips with wooden worksurfaces? Is it strong? Is there a risk of splitting the wood?

In the mean time we are filling jugs of water up from our neighbour :(

update: looks like the "G" stands for granite - so perhaps not for wood http://www.gclip.co.uk/Undermount_sink_installation.html

update: just rang gclip.co.uk and they said it will work with wood, but you don't really need it because you can put a screw into the wood. he said to use some oversize 2"washers and a screw.
