I'm currently building an extention to my bungalow, and it will result in a the doorway being recessed from the front of the building by about 4 feet (i.e. you will come out the front door into a passageway about 4 foot long before emerging from the front of the house.

I am planning to fit a glass/solid-polycarbonate sheet roof over this passageway, to make it look as though you just had open sky above you.

I was wondering about whether it was feasible to cut slots in the walls about 2" deep and then slot the glass/polycarbonate into the slots (sealing with clear silicone sealant, so that you have a sloping roof, and then extend the guttering to catch the rain at the end.

Basically, I'm trying to find out if anybody knows whether it is technically feasible to have glass/polycarbonate sheet of 3'x4' which is supported on 3 sides, and what things I need to look out for, or any tricks I can use to make it easier...

Can't show any pictures as it's not built yet...

Seems like alot of trouble to me.
If I get this right you want to get 4 straight lines with a cutter, (2 for each wall), then chase out these cuts at a pitch.
Forget the idea.
Use lead to flash onto the polycarbonate. Just two stright lines if you decide not to step flash.

As the walls are being built the bricklayer will leave reccesses for flashing.
