I'm looking for a new gas fire. A guy in a fire shop the other day said if it's domestic you can fit it yourself. Can anyone confirm that because I thought anything gas required a Corgi fitter?
Thanks.

You can fit it.

Whether it is safe and you and your family survive for long depends on whether you install it properly.

Gas pipe leak

Inadequate flue

Leaky flue

Insufficient air vents into the room

Wrong pressure setting in fire.

So many things that could be lethal if you get them wrong.

There is nothing in the law to say you can't DIY, just that you have to be competant to DIY.

If you are not competant to fit it, and do it anyway, it goes wrong, causes a disaster, and a guy who wears a horsehair wig to work tells you that you weren't competant!

Very few non-heating engineers would be competant to fit a gas fire, but that doesn't mean they don't exist!

Its much easier to just say you can't do it though, without explaining the finer details (plus not everyone is aware of the finer details!)

This one makes the collective blood pressure of the plumbing forum rise a great deal everytime it comes up!!
