You make a hole in the floor

Watch which way the joists run, you don't want to have to take the waste pipe through them to outside because it'll weaken them too much.

Alternative is to build a plinth from say 125 x 50mm timber with a 18mm ply square on top, then you can tile the sides.

You CAN buy shower trays which have legs and plastic clip-on side panels which save a load of work - easy to make them level, too.

Yep you can get stone trays on legs with panels, when people stop buying these stupid trays where you spend 2 days building a frame ect maybe they will stop making the stupid things because invariably if you fit it on the floor you have to chop your joists to bits to run the waste and end up with a downstairs shower room or if it's concrete spend a week kangoing the floor up only to find your gully outside is higher than your waste outlet and it wont run uphill, insist on the legged model and dont be put off when they say they cant get you one, you can.
