i just got a belling electirc hob and was going to fit it my self, i assume the wire from the old one will just fit into the new one.
Is this a safe assumption?? there does not seem to be a great deal in the way of instructions.

No.

Most electric hobs have approximately the same power consumption (6-8kw), and will be ok on the same circuits.

Yes. But I'd advise trying to find the power rating of the new and old hobs. It will be printed on them somewhere - measured in KW or W. Normally on a plate underneath the hob or on its sides.
