Hiya,

I have a question about a downlighter installation. We live in a flat with no access from above and would like to install a few downlighters in the hall, kitchen and bathroom. Is this possible in this kind of property ? I cant see how you could fit and wire them without access from above.

Depending on the direction the joists above run and where you want the lights to be, it can be relatively easy. In most cases it can be done by only taking out small sections of the ceiling where cables need to pass through joists, and making good afterwards.

So, in short, impossible to say without seeing the job!

You could cut 'channels' into the ceiling and then re board and plaster.

Or if you have 'enough' space a fish tape/ cable puller may be enough, thou probably very fiddly.

You'll need to make a big mess of your ceiling. It will need skimming. And your electric bills will go up! Dont do it. If you must have downlighters, research CFLs (now widely used) and LEDs (still emerging as a light source).

You will need fire hoods or fire rated fittings, since you're fitting in a fire barrier.
