Flex or cable from LV transformer to light fitting?

I repainted the ceiling in my dining room last weekend and removed the LV light fittings altogether rather than attempt to paint around them. When doing so I noticed that they had been wired using 1mm T&E from the transformer to the lamp. All earths had been sheathed and it didn't look dodgy. Is this ok or should I replace it with a flex and if so what spec should the flex be.

The only reason I ask is that I installed a very similar set-up myself in my kitchen last year and the transforms came pre-wired with flex.

Thanks in advance.

Nothing wrong with T/E.

You should inspect the connections at both ends (e.g. was there a facility on the transformer(s) to connect a cable, or was it done by cutting the flex and using choc-block) just to make sure that they are sound.

Also, if it was done to lengthen the cable you might like to check the voltage drop calculations here: http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Technical/Lighting/VoltageDrop.html to make sure it's thick enough.

Thanks for your reply ban-all-sheds.

It doesn't look like it was done to lenghten the leads, as they are only about a foot long now. It just looks like the transformsers shipped without flyleads to go to the light fittings. The cables are connected to the transformers by means of terminals to connect a pair of wires on the input side and a pair on the output.

Thanks once again.

Fine - no reason to change it, unless you've got more than about 200W of lighting per transformer..

Check that the screws are tight and put it all back.
