Hi all,

I am planning a 1m high retaining wall in our back garden. The wall will be around 13m long, and is to allow us to level the garden and form a 1.5m wide path around the rear of the house.

I am looking to put 3 or 4 flush mounted lights into the wall to light the path. The light switch will be just inside the backdoor of the house and the supply cabling will run beneath the paved path.

Can anyone recommend which cable type I should use, and will the cable need to run up behind the wall (soil side) or be built into the wall?

Still digging the footings, but need to plan ahead!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Paul.

As the cable will be buried, you will need steel wire armoured cable - and a registered electrician to install it - as electrical work outdoors is notifiable.

If you are building a cavity wall ( * ) then enlarge the cavity to allow steel wire armoured cable to be run horizontally in the cavity supported by brackets set into the brick or block work.

(*) a cavity with drainage will ensure that moisture from the retained soil does not discolour the facing bricks with efflorescence (a white power that is an indication of excessive water within the masonry structure).
