Gas Combi and woodburner

If you have £3 or £4k to spare then why not fit a proper solid fuel boiler out in a dedicated boiler room.
A plate heat exchanger from e bay,class 1 flue, heat dump facility and some electrics to interlink it with the existing system and you're off.
Im a cowboy btw and fit a few of them now and again when opportunity knocks.

When the combi is on it puts water into the heat store? Is it the combi that still pumps the water round the rads?

if you went the thermal store route and you use a version with an indirect coil then it's possible to use the sealed system to heat the store and also the solid fuel to heat the store via vented (can be pumped or gravity)

The way you decide to create your hot water could be from either or both if you used an additional blending valve.


Have a look at the gledhill heat pump solar version thermal stores.

These would suit the above the requirements. The hot water production is still good at low store temps. I have a few fitted with oil boilers and wood burners (gravity with heat leak rad and pipestat overheat connected to central heating pump)

The heat losses on these newer thermal stores is greatly improved.

No I don't fit heat stores. Just direct to the system from the plates.
And no heat leaks either but if a punter wants one I fit a flush dump valve through another plate. Adds another £400 to the install cost. Ouch. :(
The boilers are fan assisted and shut off the air damper in a power failure so pretty safe.

A bucket of water handy just sloshed into the firebox usually cools them down. Their usually in plant/boiler rooms so its not a problem.

Had one last week where I fitted an experimental heat exchanger to try and cut costs and it didn't work and had a boil over.
Rather embarrassing with the cust standing there. :oops:
Bit of a steam generator but I showed the customer how too cool them down with the bucket method.
Just took delivery of a huge plate this evening through e -bay to rectify said job.
Costly experemint. :(

When you say plates do you mean heat exchangers?

Thanks Rhondo, very interesting. I know they can be used with pressurised systems such as a combi, but what makes them different? Is it electronics that shut them down when the system gets too hot? Is it that the others boilers can't take the pressure of the pressurised systems?
