Glazed Roof - any suggestions please?

Hello all. I'm going to be replacing the flat roof on the original brick built extension at the back of the house with glazing, to let some more light in. The intention is that the roof will either either be fully glazed (similar to a flat conservatory roof) OR with glazing in the middle and with a small amount of ceiling (eg. under 1 ft) left all the way around it. Either way, I know it will need rafters running down the glazed panels. I'm then going to replace the single door at the back with some French doors.

Does anyone:

1. Have any experience with companies that can supply and/or fit the glazed roof, before I commit to a particular company? It'll probably have to be double glazed but I'm looking at both hardwood or even pvc.

2. Ditto for the French Doors - the house is Victorian, so I'd like to keep to that type of style. again, any suggestions?

Thanks everyone in advance, J.

i looked at this for my conservatory, but did it myself with timber glazing bars and laminated glass. most local firms i spoke to could do it, but it was costly for double glazing

Double glazing is more sensible in terms of saving the planet. The fuel saved by better insulation outweighs the extra embodied energy in more glass. Or, more selfishly, you are more likely to make use of the room in all seasons.
Hardwood is preferable to PVC for about a zillion reasons.
Flat roofs always present problems unless you live in a desert. Any chance of creating a slope?
Do it Yourself. That’s what this forum is all about.
French doors might be tricky to DIY but you can buy them from various places for various quantities of money. If you want bespoke oak doors you could ask a small, specialist joiner. (Like me.)

Thanks, that's helpful as is your website. Whilst I like to think of myself as a keen DIY'er (I'm going to be doing the kitchen and all the tiling as well as all the decorating myself), I think that I'm going to leave the glazed roof and French doors to an expert.

Have you made a glazed roof similar to the one I have in mind before?

In answer to your question, yes there will be a slight slope on the glazed roof.

Will hardwood French doors be horribly expensive?

Any other views/recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Not sure where to start with a supplier.

Thanks, J

Depends on design and materials. I notice the JeldWen catalogue has a pair of hardwood French doors and frame 4 foot wide for £1003. That's a tropical hardwood, not oak. You could pay quite a bit more but not a lot less.[/quote]

I've tried to attach the only picture I have managed to find of the glazed roof look I want to try to achieve. Not sure if it'll work but if it does, this is similar to what I'm after. Any ideas?
