The installation manual for my glass fronted gas fire calls for granite or marble strips, or other non combustable material. I have been quoted £90 by a granite worktop supplier,Would strips cut from a slate slab £13 from B&Q do the job

Yes. Assuming you have an angle grinder with a diamond blade, and aren't too fussy about the finish
