doitall - Loctite 55 (according to Loctite's own website) is used for sealing threads etc. It seems like you'd have to use an awful long piece of it to pack a gland!

Packing gland material which is designed for the job is available in various thicknesses.
I bought some from Preston marina and I've seen it available on the web from Holts . I choose the 3mm thickness. but not needed to use it yet.
The cost was around £2 for a length approx 300mm
