Holes in plasterboard above boiler

Hi all.

Taking floorboards up in the bedroom above the kitchen I noticed these holes in the plasterboard which sits above the boiler.

I presume this is purely for ventilation for the boiler? Any issues with this? Noise transmits very easily from downstairs presumably this won't be helping!

old ventillation if boiler is now room sealed just cover them up
