Our unit in the kitchen comes on during the night for an hour to heat up the water. There is also a power boost button which can be pressed for more hot water.

However, the unit is now overheating, and giving off a slight burning smell.I took the cover off and there is no sign of dark discolouring to the wires or any components.
Any help would be appreciated.

I take it you are on E7? If you are sure it is the unit then best practice is to replace the unit on a like for like basis, does it look something like this?:

Overheating is often caused by a wire loose in the terminal. More often the Black one, though no-one knows why.
