I have a Hotpoint WF541 washing machine which just keeps going when set on pretty much any programme. I can set it to spin and it spins and set it to pump out and it pumps out but if I put it on a full programme, it never stop and doesn't reach the spin cycle.

I thought it was a problem with the heater element so replaced this which has made no difference.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

A no heat issue will cause many machines to wash into infinity as the pcb never receives a message that the water has reached selected temperature.
This could have several causes: a heater fault, NTC fault, break in wiring/bad contact, or a defective pcb.
When you changed the element did it come complete with an NTC probe? Are all the connections in place? Have you checked for wiring breaks/loose contacts?
If you checked all the above then it is likely that the pcb is defective. A new pcb is not that expensive, but the problem is that you would also need to buy a smartcard & card reader to program it. Unfortunately these cost as much as a new pcb, so the repair would become expensive.
If the pcb is indeed faulty you could send it here for repair http://www.emwelec.co.uk/index.php?action=tech_help

Thanks for the info.
Unfortunately I am no washing machine repair specialist and have no special tools, just my mechanics tools. I figured the heater may have been at fault from your descripition above hance replacing it.
I'm not sure what an NTC probe is but needless to say I didn't complete the job with one, I just took the olf heater out and put the new one in. Is the NTC probe something I have to do.

Also, the machine actually works on 40 degree washes fine and completes the cycle OK but on hotter washes it never stops.

Does this suggest a faulty PCB?

Finally if I send it for repair, does it need reprogramming when it comes back?

Thanks very much for your help.

The NTC probe is fitted in the rubber grommet on the heater. Some heaters come supplied with an NTC...some don't & is has to be ordered separately. It is a short cylindrical probe about 10mm diameter & 2cm long. A two wire plug fits onto it. This device "gives information" to the pcb about water temperature. When changing the heater you should also consider changing the NTC.
If your machine works only on 40C the NTC may be defective, but it could also be the pcb unfortunately. Make sure the plug connections on the pcb are tight. Buy a new NTC, & if that doesn't cure the issue send the pcb in for repair. There should be no need to re-program the original pcb once repaired.
