I want to install a wood burner in an old fireplace. The hole is still present (used to have back boiler in).

I need to get the hole enlarged (not going to try this myself, will be getting a pro in) and need to know how much support a new lintel will need in order to work out how wide I can make the hole.

Cheers.

sorry to resurrect an old thread but...

...im just about to order an oak piece to use as a lintle/mantlepiece for my fireplace. In order for it to stick out enough to use as a mantle I am going to order it 225mm depth; so that it can be set 110mm into the wall (1 brick depth as the lintle part) and the rest sticking out the front (the mantle part)

the weight of the mantle part will be ok wont it? any advice good or bad?

It may be better to use a corbel like this.
