How serious is this?

Would anybody have a good idea how much it would cost to put a lintel in? £200, £500 or £1000?

For a single opening, the quotes came in at £300 - £600 mark
Upwards of £500 is about right. Or, if you want to get the steel yourself and paint it and get some replacement bricks, sand/cement etc, then you could save yourself mebbe £150.

I am curious @noseall , why do you prefer to use angle irons in certain situations (albeit treated ones) when a proper lintel (catnic, IG) is seemingly similar in cost? Is it just something you have always used?

They have been specified by different architects on several jobs. If it's good enough for them......

Also, the compact size means that a 100mm x 100mm x10mm angle is simpler to retrospectively install. We only use angle when doing remedial work or when say a steel beam has been used on the inner leaf. Otherwise its regular cavity (Catnic type) lintels for us.
