I'm renovating my house and am having three new windows, a bi-fold door and a back door. The openings are nearly ready but It's going to take about 6 weeks for the windows and doors to be manufactured, so in the meantime I want to cover them up to protect everything from the elements.

What is the best way to cover them up? If I use wood, what wood is best and how would I attach it? Alternatively could I use tarpaulin? Any advice appreciated.

Fix battens to inside of opening, and cover with osb or plywood for security. Tarpulin risks blowing out in high winds as we approach october.

Make a dummy frame from CLS, include intermediate timbers dependingon the opening size.
Board with cheap 11mm OSB or ply.
Wrap the external and sides with polythene, staple and leave an extended section at the bottom which will drape over a projecting timber to act as a cill.

Do not let rain run down the temporary frame and into the wall below.

Make this frame so that it slides in and out of the opening. Do not build it in-situ.
