On the last similar project I did a few years ago a "professional" recommended priming the MDF with Mylands Lacacote Sanding Sealer and then Acrylic eggshell as the top coat. i was very disappointed with the resilience and the surface very quickly became scuffed.

Nowadays there seem to be some more specialised "Super Tough" satinwood finishes. Are there any recommendations as to a really good brand to use, and should I use the same Mylands primer or a specific MDF primer?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. (By the way, can one still get proper oil based paint...I seem to recollect they were much more resilient than these modern concoctions) :)

Yep.......you can still get oil based satins, but id go fo oil based egshell, its a little flatter than satin and has a harder surface
