Sorry if I posted this in the wrong category, but couldn't find anywhere else for it to go!

We have an extractor fan in our bathroom, the type that comes on with the light and is fitted into the ceiling, the bathroom has no windows.

Over the past few weeks, the extractor fan has become increasingly noisy. It kind of sounds like it goes slow then speeds up for a few secs then slow again, and is very rattly with the occasional squeak. Kind of sounds like air gushing through it really fast at some points too.
Normally the fan makes some noise, but nothing to really be annoying. But now it's doing our heads in.

My partner thinks maybe the fan could be coming off its bearings, but isn't sure!

We are in rented property, and have contacted landlord who doesn't seem to be bothered about coming out to fix it, so was wondering if anyone had any idea of what could be the problem with it or knows anything about these types of fans and if we could fix it ourselves instead of waiting forever if at all for bloody landlord?

Thanks in advance

After a while, these fans do tend to wear - or at least their bearings do - which causes the fan impeller to contact the plastic outer casing.
Sometimes this goes on and on - yet on other occasions they can go quiet again.
Anyway, the only direct solution is to replace the fan unit and this is best done if you can identify the make of the fan which may well be marked on the casing (Vent Axia, Newlec, Manrose etc) and replace it like for like. This way you don't need to alter any wiring etc. The fan unit usually only has 1 or 2 screws securing it to its casing fixed to the ceiling. They aren't very expensive.

Try cleaning the blades, often dirt builds up on them causing them to become unbalanced.

yep, did try cleaning it all, but it made no difference what so ever, so I guess it needs replacing! Thankyou both for the advice
