Installation of Motor Carbon Brushes

Hi Guys,
New to this forum so hope this is an appropriate question!!....My Dad who has experience working with washing machines is trying to fix my sister's HOTPOINT ELECTRONIC DE LUXE 1000 Model 9535.
He has purchased new motor carbon brushes but when trying to install them states they don't reach the armature....is there a way of releasing them so they will make contact.

theres a tab on the brushes to flick out to extend the brush so they touch .
