Hello, I am trying to determine if my boiler is working correctly when its powering the central heating.

The boiler in question is a Jaguar 28 KTV J.

I am reading the temp from the front display. Temps in degrees C.

Once upto temperature the boiler goes through the following sequence:

  • Start temp 45
    Heaters starts
Heats up to 70 (Takes about 60 seconds)
    Stays at 70 (45 seconds)
Then the sound changes (heater going stronger?)
Heats up to the max 90 (this happens in 25 seconds)
    Then the heater stops
Drops back to 45 (takes about 60 seconds)
Sits at 45 for about 120 seconds.
    Then the cycle repeats.

Sounds like you have got a resriction some place....are all you rads open and the pins not stuck down on trv's etc.....

If all rads shut then the rapid heat up would be correct but with all rads on you sould be looking for a slower heat up.

How long should it take? and what temperatures should it sit at?

I have 5 radiators upstairs, and 3 downstairs. I am having trouble getting the downstairs rads working properly.

I opened all the rads to full. this was the result:

Start temp 49
Heaters starts
Heats up to 70 (Takes about 45 seconds)
Stays at 70 (60 seconds)
Then the sound changes (heater going stronger?)
Heats up to the max 90 (this happens in 10 seconds) Quick
Then the heater stops
Drops to 53.
Waits 3 mins and starts again.

The radiators upstairs worked really well and ALL got REALLY hot. But the downstairs ones got a little warm. :(

I have then closed all apart from the worst downstairs radiator.

The boiler did the following:

Start temp 54
Heaters starts
Heats up to the max 90 in a steady increase (this happens in about 120 seconds)
Then the heater stops
Drops to 60.
Waits 3 mins and starts again. is this a fixed time period?

The worst rad downstairs in now hotter!

I have tried balancing the system, but i cant get a good balance between upstairs and down stairs. The rads upstairs are only switched on by about 1/4 a turn and the rads downstairs stay cooler.

It seems that the hot water makes it to the downstairs flow but the return is really cold. Its like the water doesn't want to go back up.

Any thoughts on this one?

thanks in advance.
Regards
Jim
