Hi all, a neighbour asked me to have a look at her boiler (Baxi Solo conventional boiler, about 15 years old) because it was smelling funny and not working. The pilot light thermocouple was pushed in the hole, but the retaining nut was half way down the pipe. The spade connectors on the gas valve where the thermostat should be connected (and the over temperature thermocouple?) were just linked together. I switched the boiler off at the mains and told her to get a gas safe engineer in because I considered that these were unsafe and the whole boiler should be checked.

Since then she has had a relative round who has managed to relight the pilot light and is using the boiler.

Should I keep hassling her to get it checked properly, or am I just being paranoid?

Thanks, Brian.

You did correct, the linking out of overheat device is dangerous and reportable.

The boiler really does need looking at by a professional.

Possibly Jumping the gun on overheat bridge out as this was standard on certain baxis around then if fitted on gravity as opposed to fully pumped

Thanks all. A bit more info that I should have put in the original post. It is fully pumped, and another neighbours identical boiler does not have those terminals linked out. I guess that is it then, I'll keep hassling her to get it checked, especially since it smells and is in her kid's bedroom.
Thanks again, Brian.

It could help if you tell her that the 2 kids died from the same problems last week: CO poisoning.

Sounds ID to me boiler needs disconnecting from gas untill faults rectified if you ask me, if its not burning correctly there is now a hole in combustion chamber door where TC lead should be screwed in for fumes to escape, the fact it is in a bedroom is even more alarming, as a duty of care now you have seen it you should ring 0800 111 999 they will disconnect gas free of charge aslong as they are allowed in. That is without even mentioning the safety device being linked out

Thanks guys, you have confirmed what I thought about carbon monoxide leaking. I'll keep nagging, and get another neighbour (works for Transco) to have a word too. Brian.

Why did you agree to look at a boiler when your not gas safe registerd?

not being funny, but you leave yourself wide open if someone dies.

my advise is ring transco an say you can smell gas from outside her house they will then have to check her internal supply etc then your in the clear you can also just say your a dog walker an dont have to give your real name so it doesn't cause friction between you and your neighbour.

an next time dont be so bloody nice ;)

brig if u near bolton i can have look at it proably the wrong thermocouple in as universal don`t fit baxi boilers

STIMES, fair point, but when we had one, the pilot light used to blow out once or twice a year, so though it could just be that. I do know my limits though, and if it isn't in the user instructions, I won't do it.

adlplumbing, unfortunately not, but thanks for the offer.

Well said Brig. Didn't realise you were in here, I don't get out of the combustion chamber much these days!
