Any tips on what tools and books i need will be greatly received. The tools that i've had to get for the time being are a pair of pipe cutters and a tape measure, but yeah i'm going to get stuck into the book i've got and read up on everything. i've got 11 exams to do in the two years

Don't worry about those 'exams'. If you read the books you'll have no problem. As everyone has said you've got to get out with a Plumber - it's the only way!
Screw drivers, hammer, pipe pliers, adjustable spanner(s) (Bahco are excellant), pipe slices, spirit level, tap wrench, stilson, electric drill etc etc. There is no limit to the size of your tool kit except the strength of your arm to lift the box!!

All the best with it.
