Do all rad valves have a gland ? the one that i have is an old brass one leaking past the spindle. There appears to be a larger than normal gland nut but not sure if it is worth undoing ?

Just noticed name on cap - Belmont reg design 908270

Have you tried tightening?

If that doesn't help, I guess everything has to come to an end sooner or later

yeh - It was "settled" and not leaking until I tried to adjust it. Have set it to its best setting (least leak) and am going to run the CH on hot and hope it stops. Have to change it next summer.

Nut won't move anyway - don't want to force it and have a flood.

This is an old belmont type that comes with red, black or green o-rings depending on type.
You can get the o rings as a serviceable item. To change them you open the valve fully then remove packing nut. then while pulling valve up towards you unscrew the spindle(left hand thread). Some water comes out but a small towel will catch this.
Usually 3 o rings per valve remove them fir new ones with some silicon grease and put spindle back in in reverse order.
Tightening packing gland on these does not work!

The Pegler Belmont rad valve is a truly beautiful product, and can be serviced without draining down.

The job is simple for any plumber who stocks both types of the correct O rings.

Edit: shambolic got there first. However, IIRC there are two O rings per valve, not three.

Not done one for a while though showing my age!

Here is a picture of the valve - it's over 25 years old. Can I change the O rings on this type without draining down ?

Like I said I will replace it in the summer but a bit loath to do it now - in fact there are four of these valves left, all the others have been replaced in the past.
