Not the electrics, I have those connected and working no problems.

My main problem is that three of my lights have fallen from the ceiling (saved from gravity by the flex). On two of them, the plaster/wood/whatever was holding it to the ceiling has come away. On a third light, the ceiling is obviously just some kind of thin plaster as the screws go right through and there's nothing to hold them.

It's an old house and I suspect one too many light changes have worn all the plaster away. I can't for the life of me get the light's screws to bite into anything and stay there. And I can't get at the joists as the floorboards above are either laminated over or tiled over. Any suggestions?

If breezer's suggestion failed, what I did once was to put a 12" lenght 3"x1" timber thru' the ceiling rose hole depending on the size, use plasterboard screw in thru' the ceiling to pick up the timber while you're gripping it with your hand/finger in the ceiling hole then swing it across to cover the hole then put the screw in the other side.Make sure you don't screw thru' the wires and turn the mains off.

If you can access the upper surface of your ceiling fit a square bit of plywood above the broken ceiling ( drill hole for wires first ) and screw into that. I used that method on my upstairs rooms as I was able to get into the loft.
