I am decorating my downstairs WC and wanted to replace the light fitting which was a covered bulb type? with a standard ceiling rose, bulb and shade. I removed the old unit and there were quite a lot of wires in the ceiling void (which I don't really understand) but taking a simple view of things took the old Live, Neutral, and Earth wires and connected them to the new Live, Neutral, and Earth connections. I turned the fuse back on at the fuse box, flicked the switch and there was light, well done I thought!

About 40 minutes later I was still working in the room filling the walls (with the light on) and the bulb went out but not with a pop it almost faded out? I turned the fuse off again and removed the bulb which seems to now have a smoky effect on the glass?

Have I mucked something up or do you think I just bought a faulty bulb?

Lights are still off at the fuse box just in case but it will be dark soon :(

Any help or advice appreciated....
