Hello - we need to decorate the whole of the upstairs of our house. it's an early 50s house and there are numerous hairline cracks in the plasterwork and round doors and ceilings along the panels. The walls also have various lumps and bumps.
Rather than strip back to the walls and replaster everywhere, is using lining paper that can be painted the answer? and if so, what would people recommend. Thanks for any advice.

You need to get rid of the lumps and bumps if you can but lining can be very successful once you have done that. I have a '30s house and the plaster has many hairline cracks but looks great when lined and emulsioned. I used 1000 grade paper but you can get 1200 if you want something a bit heavier duty.
