Hi sorry again the wall is load bearing, it wasnt on the garage side as the joists ran the same way but on inspecting underneath boards upstairs the bedroom joists run in to it. Would you think I`d need a structual engineer to calculate the load or would building reg`s tell me this. The only walls upstairs the joists support are lightweight partition. Cheers for advice.

No. Fit a standard 75mm high concrete lintel, or a standard steel one - no calcs required with either

4ft is not a standard door opening though

I was just going to have an open archway, no door, would 4 ft not be acceptable ?

If its just an opening its fine.

Otherwise non-standard openings mean more costly doors

But if you are doing an arch, do you need a lintel too?

thanks for your reply Woody. I`m just waiting on some plans to contact building reg`s. I would of thought I`d need the lintel with the joists being above, its not an arch as such but just an opening with curved corners. I`ve read all kinds about padstones and colums because of thermalite not having a great crush value. There seems a lot to consider just for a conversion but I might be reading to much in to it. Cheers. Peter.
