loft conversion smoke detectors

i would like to know how many smoke detectors are required for a loft conversion, already there are 2 ;one in ground floor hallway, second in first floor hallway.

I have been told they are required in every room inter-linked using mains.

as this will be using existing wiring is this likely to effect electrical regulations in any way? i will have to get new fuse box for new electrics in loft.

Assuming you are converting a two-storey private house to a three-storey, you do not need smoke alarms in each room - just one on each landing (all interlinked of course).

ok that's interesting i was told by a specialist loft conversion company they are needed in all rooms.

No, they are not.

If you look at the regulations pertaining to fire, you will see that when converting a 2-storey house to a 3-storey with a loft conversion, you need to have a protected staircase with fire doors off each habitable room, on each of the 3 floors.

However, unlike public buildings, schools and offices etc, the fire doors in a domestic loft conversion are not required to have self closers. Ask the 'specialist' loft conversion firm why this is, because the fact of not having self-closers and only having an alarm on each landing, are closely related.

We had a similar situation, but instead of replacing "most" doors with firedoors BC allowed us to have smoke alarms in "most" rooms.

So could be talking about meeting the regs in different ways

we are not replacing any doors at all, one door at the foot of the stairs(loft) which even that the architect said doesn't need to be fire door. i guess that's why we need the smoke alarms everywhere!

any idea whether the electrical work for the smoke detectors in the existing rooms would effect the part p cert.?

Yes apart from cupboards and bathrooms,but halls , landings and other dwelling room i.e. bedrooms , living and dinning rooms etc. need to have a smoke or heat alarms fitted ..or replace doors for fire doors ,which you have to look at cost and the mess that occurs with fitting .

Friends have recently done this and their BC said they could either swap all the doors for fire doors or put a smoke alarm in every room...they chose the later.
