I am not experienced in electrics so have made a simple change of 2 ceilings lights into a problem, which I hope someone can avoid me getting an electrician to solve. (They are 2 lights in a downstairs loop of 3)

So, for the 2nd light in the loop I cut the cables rather than removed the light. I also didn't mark the wires and do not have a meter to measure which cable is which.

For light No1 in the sequence I just changed the light. I also copied the format of the wires into my changing of light No2.

I went for trial and error as it looked like I had 3 options on black cables
to test. (2 blacks in one section to neutral and 1 black in another to live)

The results were:-

1. light No1 on only, no switch. Light 2 switches on/off. Light 3 off only
2. light No1 on only. Light 2 and 3 off only
3. Trip switch will not let me turn the power back to downstairs lights.

Maybe I miss something, but option 3 should work??

For reference all red are together and all earth are together.

Apologies for length of the question. Maybe I am making an error which makes it at least humorous.

David.

Sorry ;)

Go up to the high street and spend £8 on a multimeter. Then report back and it will be easy.
