Although I always do, why do you need to earth a metal plate switch when you are using metal screws through a metal plate to a metal box ?
(Told you it was dumb)

earth continuity.

you should not rely on the screws making a good connection, some also have had palstic screws

Cheers breezer, just a thought when I've been struggling to put that sleeved earth wire in ;)

The acceopted wisdom, is 1st earth the faceplate, and if you are going to be lazy, then don't earth the back box, you can use the screws for this if (and only if) the box has at least one fixed lug, that aligns with a grounded screw hole on the fitting. The thing of prime importance is that the bits you can touch be earthed, even if the screws work loose. Earthing of the bits you can't touch is highly desirable, but less of a potential threat to life.
