I have some wooden boxes, which I believe are plywood, in my garden for growing vegetables. The boxes have metal strips around them which have gone rusty and are breaking up.

Can the metal strips be replaced please?

Simply remove the old ones and replace. As to the bands, the likes of builders merchants or B&Q sell perforated zinc plated band on a roll (generally used for tieing down roof blades onto wall plates) Looks something like this sites attached images http://www.fixingband.com/

Thanks and that's a great help. I am going to have to admit to not having heard of that.

The ones I have are not perforated but presumably they are available without the perforations.

There is just one thing, I cannot see how they could be put on the boxes as tightly as the existing ones which look as if they have been done with some type of tool?

Sounds like you have a tea chest or two.

Not ideal for growing plants in as they will decay rapidly.

Thanks. No they are not tea chests they are plant growing boxes and have their own feet. I have had them for about 10 years and not decayed yet.
I just need a reply about getting the bands as tight as the original.

The boxes may have been fixed with some sort of strapping tool to hold the sides tightly together.
This may be awkward to do, so another way is to use some angled material and bolt them through the ply (if the ply edges are in good enough condition).
You may be able to pull the sides together using a rope tourniquet or a proper webbing ratchet and buckle strap - but that wont allow you to stretch the builders band, of course. If you can measure that accurately, its easy enough to hammer a 90 degree bend in a vice.
John :)

Thanks. I just need to put some new bands on and tighten them up.
