For new installation work I know brown/blue colours have to be used, but when doing a re-wire is it still permissable to use existing cables, e.g. light switch cables in the wall that cannot be pulled out. I would like to use these to avoid chasing out the wall for a new cable.

You can leave old cable in operation but you need to fit a label at the CU if you are installing cable with the new colours.

You could also sleeve the old conductors with the new colours:

Blue
Brown
Green & Yellow

You should sleeve the earth conductors regardless if they are not already done.

if you re-use existing cable it is not a full rewire.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't do it but the customer should be aware of the fact you have re-used existing cable and it should be documented that the job was only a partial rewire.
