more noise from boiler

Over the past year my boiler makes an intermmittent loud switching noise,this comes from the gas valve, but only seems to happen on the C/H cycle,I have also noticed that the boiler case gets very hot,infact to hot to put your hand on. I have lowered the boiler stat setting to 3 and the problem has gone away. I cant help thinking there is something not right here.
