Took jam jar for mot yesterday,Failed on the two front brake hoses...i got quoted £137.So i said ok i'll see what my own machanic can do it for..and then he said,if you take the car away and bring it back you will have to pay the full £44 retest again..and he carried on to say that the 14 day retest as been chucked out by voasa..So that means really that they have got us by the short and curlies...alas i let them do it...

The retest rules have changed slightly (this month)
Now you can get a free retest for simple things (light bulbs, washers/wipers, tyres etc) if you take it back next day.
Then it all varies (details are on the dept of transport website) depending on what it failed on. Now get 10 working days for a retest which (from memory) is half the price of a full retest if failed on 1 item, or full retest if failed on more than 1.
If the car is left with the garage to do the work, then its a free retest.
Have a look at the DOT website as the rules are pretty confusing!
