Just moved into my first house and want to make some minor changes to the wiring which is using the old colours. In one of the bedrooms we want to rehinge the door so it swings open in the other direction. The problem is that this would block the lightswitch which isn't very conveniant. The solution is to move the light switch to the wall on the other side of the doorframe.

1. Given the wiring is done using old colours, does that mean I shouldn't use spare old-colour wiring to move the switch?

2. Mixing the colours would be more confusing but what should I do to conform with the regs? It certainly seems overkill to have to rewire a large amount just because of 1-2 metres of cable.

If you are doing it no problem *- if an electrician did it there might a question mark over whether it complies with the current regulations - though that would be for a debate.

I agree - see above.

If we replace old wiring with new colours and end up with a mix then we slap a big label saying so on the Consumer Unit.

* Running new cable (even old colours) does raise the issue of safe zones and the possible need to ensure that the new cable is additionally protected by an RCD.
