We are wanting to re use an old fire place in our 1950's house, and having removed the bricked up front this is what we have left.

What's the best way to reinstate it "log basket" type grate or a concrete? fire back and grate.

If it's the fireback route how easy are they to fit.

Obviously the chimney will need a good sweep prior to lighting the fire!!!!

Hi,
There are a whole host of answers to this. Is the brickwork either side exposed as a finish or has all the plaster been hacked off.
It looks fairly narrow so a small bedroom grate could go in. This is the type thats a cast fireback and shelf attached. It can be put straight up to the brickwork and plastered in. You could clean up or render the chamber and put a basket in as you say. Or get a slim grate that fits height and width wise and then add a surround of your choosing.
As I say, you have many options.
Any grate will have to be backfilled and of course, the chimney swept.
