I'm putting in a light fitting and on the fitting there is no earth wire connected from the connector block to the actual fitting. The sticker on the fitting shows an earth symbol.

Do I simply attach a short earth wire from the connector block to the fitting itself?

The wire coming out of the ceiling has all 3 connections: live, neutral & earth.

No, the middle terminal on the strip of connector blocks goes over that little tab of metal that’s sticking through that piece of cardboard and one of the screws holds that and one holds the cables

To revisit this explanation....

No and Yes.
You connect your live and neutral to the outside terminals indiicated, the earth connects to the middle one however the opposing middle terminal "must" be screwed onto that metal tab, as that is what earths the body of the fitting.

This is common in modern cheap fittings.

... and surely also quite common in (both modern and ancient) expensive fittings, particularly metal-bodied fluorescent fittings? Is it not a better/safer/surer way of earthing the metalwork (one less joint) than having a bit of cable going from the terminal block to some connection onto the metalwork?

Kind Regards, John
