My Ocean Alpha 240e boiler started playing up yesterday, when i turn on the hot tap or central heating you can hear the gas flow but it won't ignite without me giving it a whack on the side at which point it ignites. My central heating was meant to come on at half 4 this morning but the house was freezing.

Anyone have any ideas what this could be and how difficult to fix and approximate cost? I know this boiler hasn't been serviced for over 5 years but has ran fine for a long time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does the little fan symbol go out on startup, and would you wait 5 years before having your car serviced and still expect it to work?

If its intermittent like that then it should be a simple problem to fix.

We would charge about £84 diagnostic fee in our local area and a part costing under £30 might be needed.

But if you are unwilling to pay to have it serviced then you are likely to have some wait before you even can get an engineer when you finally decide to as we are quite busy at the moment. British Gas took over an hour to answer the phone to a customer.

Yep 45yearsagasman, the top symbol with a fan and a chimmney, LED goes out when lit. Just got in from work and the house was toasty as it had turned on as advertised. I'm going to phone my mate who works for a gas firm and have it serviced. Thanks for your help.
