Hi

I'm trying to replace the pull cord light switch in my bathroom but the wiring is from the 60s and is Black, Red and Green. I'm assuming the green is earth as it is fixed to the base of the existing switch. Can someone tell me what the black and red wires are? Thanks

the black and red are live wires and black should have some tape or sleeving to show that.

How many reds and blacks

If only one red and only one black then these are for L1 and L2 in the switch.

If more than one of each it is a bit more complicated

The black wire will be the switch wire and go to terminal L1 and the red is permanent live and go to the COM terminal. The black wire should be sleeved red to mark it.
