Is there really any such thing as one coat point for walls? And I don't just mean something that claims to be this, but something that actually works.

I am sure the makers get good results in the lab with a smooth white base and careful application under controlled conditions, but in the real world.....................
I suppose a lot depends on what kind of result somebody is satisfied with, I have seen some awful jobs. One I went to after the tenant had decorated, one coat over everything including plug sockets light switches and dozens of lumps of blu-tac left on the walls from kids posters!
