Tried removing wallpaper paste with warm water and soap, and sugar soap, scraping and zinsser wallpaper remover

However some paste still remains

Do anyone know a primer I can use before applying a water based wall paint

There are a number of options

One is to use a decent sander to sand away any residue. Alternatively, use something like Zinsser Guardz.

Why not just use lining paper though? Unless your plaster is up to a veryyyyy high standard you will benefit from lining paper. It is cheap and, with advice, very easy to apply to a high standard.

Thanks opps

Zinsser Guardz looks good

I was thinking about lining paper, but I have never put wallpaper or lining paper up

I used zinnser guardz on a ceiling after stripping the wallpaper of it.

<minor rant about the generation that thought wallpapering a ceiling was a good idea>

It worked, as in, the paint didn't peel and went on fine.
