You may be good cat owners but most arent, they kick the thing out at night and think looking after a cat is just putting some milk and a tin of whiskers out.

Why is kicking a cat out at night cruel?

Milk is bad for cats, many are lactose-intolerant. Water is far better for them. Talking of which, tinned cat food is 70% water, but despite this, is bad for cat's kidneys.

Food like Hill's Science Diet is much better.

Quote from someone writing about their cat (who had kidney disease):

"Monty's diet had to be radically altered. No more of his usual tinned cat food or treats - all packed full of salt and protein - and no more saucers of milk. Instead, a specially formulated diet and a simple bowl of water."

I, for one, don't think it is cruel...unless they really don't want to go out.
Mine are finicky eaters....
