Does anyone remember this from 1995? When BT/OFcom realised they were running out of numbers and tacked 01 onto the front of everyones phone numbers.

Then 5 years on, when 02 numbers were introduced.

Did it cause anyone here any disruption?

I ask because I just found a sticker on the back of an old telly for a local aerial firm, with the number beginning 0302. That should be 01302!

Also I still see the odd shop sign with the phone number still as 0302!

I remember getting some business cards printed shortly afterwards

the code here had changed to 01705. then it changed again to 02392

I remember the Yorkshire Evening Post running a front page story about how Leeds would be getting London's 'prestigious' 01 code - little knowing that so would everyone else :)

Actually, I was 'Phone Day co-ordinator' at work. Wasn't so much of an issue in York, where it was just going from 0904 to 01904, but I can see how it was much more of a pain for people in Leeds, Leicester and some others.

Or for London, as they change from 01 to 070 and 080, and then again to whatever it is they have down there now....

I can remember when my telephone number started with SHE (Shepherds Bush) later stated as numbers 743

Leeds went from 0532 to 0113 then an add a 2 on the start of your actual number.

I notice BBC radio stations are now using 03 numbers if you want to ring them.

Wonder how long untill they need to add another digit?
