I'm about to hang a large picture (100cm x 70cm) and I thought I'd be able to simply string a piece of hanging wire from the clips (see pics below) on either side of the backing - but on closer inspection these clips are nowhere near strong enough to hold the picture and will snap when they take the weight.

Any idea on what I need to hang this picture?

cheers

Those look like spring clips merely designed to hold the backing board into the frame.

The frame itself looks quite heavy. How about using two angle brackets?

Screw the slotted side to the wall with horizontals uppermost & adjust for level.
Trim the horizontal limb so that it is slightly shorter than the frame thickness.
(this should leave one hole in the horizontal limb)
Hammer two tacks into the underside of the top part of the picture frame (as retainers)
When hanging, locate the retaining tacks downward into the holes of the two brackets.
Virtually impossible to knock off and strong as houses!

I assume the frame at the back is wooden.

Screw two screw eyes to the frame recess, and fit picture cord.
